In the latest instalment of The Match: Champions for Change, Phil Mickelson and Charles Barkley upset the odds to earn a victory over Steph Curry and Peyton Manning.
The third event in the series took place at Stone Canyon Golf Club in Arizona, pitting the two teams against each other in an exhibition match to raise money for charity. Once again, the show provided a fun afternoon for everyone involved, and it gave fans something to watch in an otherwise quiet weekend on the golf calendar.
The winning pair went into the event as underdogs, as Golden State Warriors’
Curry is a scratch golfer, while twice Super Bowl winner Manning is a single-digit handicapper. But it was Mickelson and Barkley who secured a convincing win in what turned out to be an entertaining contest on Thanksgiving.
The match was played under a modified alternate shot format. Each player would hit a tee shot and the team would then use the best of the two. With little experience on a golf course, Barkley was widely expected to be terrible, but the NBA legend played surprisingly well, and he and Mickelson led from the third hole. After that they never looked back, and the unlikely duo secured a convincing win in what was a good-spirited and light-hearted match.
The losing team started off well, with Manning taking the first hole with a three-foot par, before almost eagling the next after his putt came within centimetres. In the end Curry missed the next attempt and Mickelson levelled with a birdie.
Mickelson then birdied the next to move in front and they managed to hold their lead for the remainder of the event to clinch the win. The victory was sweet revenge for Mickelson, who lost to Manning and Tiger Woods in the last Champions for Change event back in May.
