The main event for UFC 264 is set, and as expected it’s a rubber match between Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor who are set to lock horns for a third time to settle the score once and for all.
The two lightweight contenders faced off in the main event of UFC 257 back in January, and it was Poirier who emerged victorious, knocking out McGregor to level the score at 1 win apiece.
After both men confirmed an interest in running the fight back, things took a dramatic turn this week when Poirier revealed McGregor had failed to deliver on his promise to donate $500,000 to the American’s charity.
McGregor pledged to make the sizeable donation to the Good Fight Foundation in the lead up to their last contest, but after the Irishman made one of his trademark pre-fight predictions, Poirier made a startling revelation.
Responding to McGregor on Twitter, Poirier wrote: “That’s a fun prediction. You also predicted a donation to my foundation and you are your team stopped responding in January. See you soon. 10th July, paid in full!”
McGregor hit back, claiming he was still waiting to see plans for how the donation would be spent, which Poirier said had been sent before his team were ghosted. This sparked an astonishing back-and-forth in which McGregor threatened to call of the fight, however UFC president Dana White has revealed the contracts are now signed, setting up a mid-summer grudge match between the bitter rivals.
Last time round the build up was decidedly cordial – especially for a fight involving McGregor – but with the bad blood brewing already, it’s clear the pleasantries will be a thing of the past when thee two face off for a third time.
McGregor Vs Poirier 3 will take place on July 10th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
