The Ballon d’Or is an extremely prestigious award in the football industry. However, that doesn’t mean it hasn’t faced its fair share of criticism from fans over the years, as there have been some odd winners. This year is no exception as the world class Lionel Messi picked up his record 7th award the other night. However, this has faced a huge back lash wit the award being called “rigged” and German media going as far to call it “scandalous” as they claim they have “cheated” the goal machine Robert Lewandowski.
Lewandowski came second to Messi this year, despite being the clear favourite to win due to his immaculate season. Lewandowski racked up a whopping 41 goals and 7 assists. The award winner Messi said when he collected his award “It’s an honour to be here with you today. You broke records and you deserved to win the Ballon d’Or. You’ve had an incredible year,” directing that at the German league striker. Lewandowski also missed out on picking up the award last year as it was cancelled due to covid – 19. Just the same as this year he was favourite again to pick up the award then.
Many have taken to social media to display their disgust towards the award. Jorginho who plays for Chelsea was also one of the favourites to stop Messi reaching his record award, however ending missing out by just over 150 points to Messi. In fourth with half the points as the Chelsea player in third was Karim Benzema the Real Madrid Striker, who has found his form again and is leading Real Madrid from the front this season. Followed by French midfielder N’golo Kante and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
Lionel Messi now has 2 more awards than his rival Cristiano Ronaldo in their competition to retire with the most awards. However, Ronaldo has found form at Manchester United and has been a key part to helping them back to where they want to be. Whereas Messi has scored 1 goal since he joined Paris giants Paris Saint Germain. So, who will finish their career with the most awards?
